The winner of the 1898 Grand National was Drogheda, who would come away from the field to win the race by three lengths.
Returned with an SP of 25/1, he wasn’t really fancied by punters, but that didn’t stop him from coming out on top. Conditions on the day were good, and 10 of the 24 runners would complete the course.
The team behind Drogheda and the horse himself had very little experience with them before coming here. This was the one and only time that Drogheda would run in the Grand National, but he was able to jump and navigate the course regardless of that.
Winning trainer Richard Dawson was having his very first Grand National runner here, and he would only ever have one more, 20 years later, which was pulled up and failed to complete.
The only knowledge of the Grand National came from jockey John Gourley. Two years prior to this race, he rode Manifesto, who would eventually win this race twice, however when Gourley paired with him, they fell in the race.
This would be the last ride that Gourley would have in the Grand National, going out with a win and never coming back.
