In 1904, Moifaa would land the Grand National, and he would do so nicely, coming away from the field to win by a distance of eight lengths.
The horse was not a typically bred runner for the time and would actually become the first non-British and Irish-bred winner of the race. He was bred in New Zealand and, in 2014, was inducted into the New Zealand Horse Racing Hall of Fame as being their first Grand National winner.
Going on the day was described as good to soft, and there was not much support for Moifaa in the market, he would return with a winning SP of 25/1.
A total of 26 runners would run in the Grand National, with nine of those able to complete the course and cross the winning line.
After winning this contest, the King bought Moifaa at the time, King Edward VII, who hoped to have a lot of success with him, but after the purchase, Moifaa would not win another race.
That included coming back to Aintree in 1905 when trying to defend his Grand National crown, he was sent off as favourite but fell in the race.
Winning trainer Mr Hickey would end his career with a perfect Grand National record, as this was the only runner he had in the race, one runner and one winner.
Jockey Arthur Birch would ride the winner, this would be one of three rides in the race for him, the only time he completed the course.
