The winner of the 1908 Grand National was the American-bred horse, Rubio. He would come away from the field and record a relatively comfortable winning distance of 10 lengths.
There wasn’t much support for him in the betting ring on the course, as he was returned at a huge SP of 66/1, not too many people were seemingly on him to win this race.
Eight of the 24 entries would manage to complete the course, with the going not helping them, as it was officially described as soft, and heavy in places on the day.
Rubio would be running in the Grand National for the first time here and would return to try and defend his crown in 1909 but fell in that race.
The winning trainer of the race was Frank Withington, and he would actually saddle the first two home in the race, as he also trained the second-placed Mattie Macgregor.
To make this even more impressive, these two were actually the first two ever Grand National runners from the trainer, making his achievement that little bit better.
However, future success would not come. Withingon sent many more runners to the National over the year, but only four of them would ever complete the course, he never had another runner win or place in the race. Some would say he used up all his luck on the first outing.
Henry Bletsoe was the winning rider, and he is another who won here, but had little luck elsewhere in the race. He was also competing in the race for the first time, so he, plus the horse and trainer, were all on Aintree debut when they won this.
Bletsoe would go on to ride another six times in the race, but on each occasion, he would fail to complete on his mount.
