1911 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1911 Grand National Painting
Painting of the Canal Turn in 1911

The 1911 Grand National was run in torrential rain, and the conditions definitely played a part in the outcome of the contest. The winner on the day was Glenside, who would go on to record a winning distance of 20 lengths.

He won the race with a starting price of 20/1, clearly not fancied by too many, but ultimately, he handled conditions the best on the day.

Just four runners managed to finish the contest. The ground was called good to soft, good in places, but the rain before the race and during certainly softened that quite a bit.

Of the four runners that managed to finish the course, Glenside was the only one to complete without being remounted, helping him to easily land the race with a big distance back to the rest, who all fell and were remounted at different points of the race.

A quirk of Glenside is that he was actually a one-eyed horse, but that didn’t stop him from winning one of racing’s biggest prizes.

The winning trainer of Glenside was Captain Collis, and this would be his only Grand National winner. The horse was actually the only runner for him ever to finish the race. Five others all failed to finish for him.

Jack Anthony was the winning rider, and at the time, he was just a young jockey having his first ride in the Grand National and managing to win the race at the first time of asking. But there’s more to his story. He would go on to win the race another two times and would also place in it three times, ending with an excellent record.

The 1911 Grand National is a race that has actually been seen by more people than most from this era, and it’s all due to a BBC Documentary on the race. A documentary called The Big Flutter: The Grand National on Film was shown by the BBC in 2011.

The film was created due to the film of the race being found in 2007, with the tape being in an auction house in London. Eventually, the BBC would show the footage in the documentary.
