Winning the 1913 Grand National was a horse named Covertcoat, who would win by a distance in a tough race where only three runners would actually complete the course.
The going was soft, good to soft in places, which certainly didn’t help the number of finishers in the contest.
Covertcoat was having his second attempt at winning the Grand National after falling a year earlier in 1912. He would come back a year later to try and defend his crown but could only finish 8th in that race under considerably more weight.
Percy Woodland was the winning jockey on the day and would win his second Grand National here. The first success he had was ten years earlier, winning the 1903 Grand National on Drumcree. He would finish second in the race in 1905, so he was almost a three time winning rider.
The trainer was Robert Gore, and he recorded back-to-back Grand National wins here. He was a trainer who took the Grand National very seriously and, in many of his years, would send multiple runners to the race, something that was far less common than it is in the present day.
However, Covertcoat was his only runner in 1913 and won despite sending nothing else to the race. A year earlier, in 1912, he would win his first Grand National with Jerry M, one of three runners in the contest.
With four other horses of his placing over the years, his record in the race is very strong.
