The 1916 renewal of the race was run at Gatwick Racecourse due to World War I. This was the first of three runnings that would take place away from Aintree Racecourse, which, during the war, was turned into a war office and repurposed.
When moving away, the race also changed its name, no longer known as the Grand National. In this particular year, the race was called the Racecourse Association Steeplechase, but for the following two years before returning to Aintree, it would be called the War Steeplechase.
For some people, records from this race do not count for the overall stats, while others do count them because even though it wasn’t at Aintree, the races attracted runners that would have run at Aintree and gave them a race to compete against each other in.
All participants who won in this particular year would be doing so for the one and only time.
The winning horse was Vermouth, a horse who would run a total of four times in these races but won just once. This was his first attempt at the race, with the others coming in the following two years at Gatwick, then in 1919, the first race back at Aintree.
James Bell was the winning trainer, and Vermouth would actually be his only ever Grand National runner, with those four occasions listed above being the only time he had a runner in the contest.
The rider was Jack Reardon. His first Grand National ride came in 1915, which was his second and last-ever ride in the race.
