The winner of the 1925 Grand National was Double Chance, who would go on to win the race by a distance of four lengths. The horse, having his one and only run in the race, was successful from Old Tay Bridge, the first of two second-placed efforts for this horse.
Thirty-three horses would run in the race, and nine of those would finish the contest while the race was run on good ground.
The winning trainer of Double Chance was Fred Archer, and he would be left with a perfect Grand National record after this. Double Chance was his only ever runner in the race, so it’s a perfect one-runner and one-winner record for Archer.
The jockey was John Wilson. He would have three rides in the race during his career, this being the middle of them. It was his only winner and the only time he completed the course.
Finally, for 1925, this race goes down in history as being the first Grand National to use what is now known as a tape start, where a length of tape is stretched across the track and released by the starter when it’s time to go.
This type of start in 1925 was known as a gate start but is the same way to start a race as we use now, known as the tape start.
It’s always a point of controversy, the start of a Grand National, and this is when the starting method dates back to with the race.
