Thirty runners would go to post for the 1926 Grand National, which was run on good to firm ground.
The winner of the race was Jack Horner, who took the contest by three lengths, with a starting price of 25/1.
He was trained by Harvey Leader, a man who was having his first Grand National winner and doing so with his first-ever runner in the race, though he was from a family that understood the race very well.
A year later, the Leader father and son duo of Tom and Ted would take the 1927 Grand National. Ted was the bother of this year’s winning trainer, Harvey, and Tom was father to them both.
Billy Watkinson was the winning rider who took the race at the sixth attempt and this would actually be his final ever Grand National ride.
The race was an international affair, as Watkinson was a New Zealand-born jockey competing. Alongside this, the horse was also owned by an American, Charles Schwartz, but this was something that came about just a week before the race.
With a week to go until the contest, Schwartz decided to buy Jack Horner for the price of 5000 Guineas. It proved to be a timely purchase, winning the Grand National a few days later and taking him the much bigger prize of £5000.
Commiserations must go out to connections of the second-placed runner, Old Tay Bridge, who was second for back-to-back years, losing by four lengths in 1925 and three lengths here in 1926.
