The 1927 Grand National was won by Sprig, who was sent off at the 8/1 favourite for the contest.
It was a case of third-time luck, as the horse had previously run in the race in 1925 and 1926, finishing fourth on both occasions before finally going better and taking this renewal.
Thirty-seven runners went to post on the day in tough conditions, with the going described as soft and heavy in places at Aintree.
The winning jockey and trainer combination were actually father and son, making this a real family affair for the Leader family.
Trainer was Tom Leader, winning the first of his two Grand Nationals, a second followed two years later when Gregalach won for him. The two couldn’t be further apart from each other, Sprig was 8/1 favourite, while Gregalach was 100/1 outsider.
The jockey was Ted Leader, who had 12 Grand National rides in total, with most of them being for his father. He would ride this winner, but not the second, as he was on another one of his father’s more fancied runners in 1929.
First Grand National Radio Coverage
The 1927 Grand National will also be seen as the first where media coverage of the race allowed others away from the course to truly get involved with the spectacle.
For the first time, radio broadcast coverage of the Grand National would take place, provided live by the BBC, allowing listeners to hear how the race unfolded. For many years, radio commentary of the race was the only way to keep up with things in real-time, as early pictures were recorded and shown afterwards.
The Grand National is now broadcast around the world to millions of people, but in terms of media coverage, it was 1927 where it all began, with the first radio commentary.
