An unfancied runner would claim victory in the 1932 Grand National, as Forbra beat off competition to cross the line first and take the race by a winning distance of two lengths.
Sent off at 50/1 by the bookmakers, he was not really fancied to go well here but caused a big surprise and took the race, albeit in narrow circumstances in the end, in a finish that was great to see and close between a few runners.
The winning trainer was Tom Rimell, and this would be the only Grand National success for him, from a total of nine attempts, including those that came after this win.
The jockey on the day was Tim Hamey, and like Rimell, this would go down as the only Grand National win of his career.
He didn’t have much luck in the race, only managing to complete the course three times out of 12 rides, and two of those three completions came on Forbra.
Forbra would have two further runs in the race and completed on both occasions, with a sixth in 1933 and a fourth in 1934.
Going on the day was described as good, and a total of 36 horses ran in the race, with eight of them being able to complete the course.
Two former winners were back for more here, but without success. The 1930 winner, Shaun Goilin, fared best of those, finishing a very respectable third in the race. The winner from 1931, a year earlier, was Grakle, but in his bid to follow up, he would fail to complete the course.
