The 1935 Grand National was a real test for runners, and just six of the starters managed to finish the course. Twenty-seven runners went to post on this day, a generally smaller field than we are used to seeing.
The winner was Reynoldstown, and this would be the first of his two wins in the race. He would go on to retain his title a year after this race, becoming a back-to-back winner.
The trainer was Noel Furlong for both occasions and from his six Grand National runners, the two wins with Reynoldstown were the only two occasions where his runners would complete the course.
The jockey on the day was Frank Furlong, the son of trainer Noel, so it was a real family affair. This would be Frank’s only Grand National winner during his career, from a total of three runs in the race. A couple of years earlier, he was close to finishing second, this year, he got the job done.
The winner was returned with an SP of 22/1 and won the race by three lengths. Blue Prince was the horse in second, while the big talking horse this year was favourite Golden Miller, who unseated his rider towards the end of the race.
