The 1939 Grand National saw a total of 37 horses go to post, with the going on the day described as good.
11 of the 37 runners would complete the course, and they were led home by winner Workman, who took the race at odds of 100/8.
The winning distance was three lengths, small for a race of this nature, and second-placed MacMoffat would fill the same position a year later in his bid to go one better.
That bid to go better was something that Workman was able to do, though he finished 3rd in the 1938 renewal of the National, and this time around went two places better.
Jack Ruttle was the winning trainer, and to add to that, this was his one and only ever runner in the Grand National, so technically, he is one of the very few people to have a 100% record in the race.
The rider on the day was Tim Hyde, and although this horse did run in the 1938 edition of the Grand National, neither trainer nor jockey were involved with that run. This was also the one and only victory in the race for Hyde, from a total of six attempts.
