A bumper field of 47 runners went to post for the 1952 Grand National, with 10 of them managing to complete the course and get home.
The winner was Teal, the only time he had run in the Grand National. He was trained by Neville Crump and ridden by Arthur Thompson.
The horse would run out a five-length winner, beating Legal Joy who finished in second place, and winning at odds of 100/7.
We had drama on course before the race, a false start caused by horses running the tape would lead to a 10-minute delay in the off, but it was worth the wait for those watching on course and listening at home.
Neville Crump and Arthur Thompson would combine in the Grand National a total of nine times throughout their careers. This win would be their second and final one together, though Crump would go on to have another win in the race after.
They began their success with Sheila’s Cottage, who won the 1948 Grand National, their second attempt to win the race together.
Four years later, attempt number six to win the race would be this one, when Teal crossed the finishing line in first place for the team.
