The 1953 Grand National was won in comfortable style by Early Mist, trained by Vincent O’Brien and ridden by Bryan Marshall.
It was good ground on the day, and 31 went to post, but this was a tough race, with plenty of horses struggling, and just five runners would complete the course.
Trainer O’Brien was beginning to make a name for himself, and this win would catapult him into the mainstream. It would also be the start of something special in the Grand National.
He would go on to win the next two runnings of the race, making it three in a row, beginning with Early Mist.
It was also the start of a double for jockey Marshall, who would again team up with O’Brien to win the race 12 months later, his two only wins in the Grand National from a total of nine rides.
The race was certainly one that favoured the bookmakers, with a 20/1 winner, and the shortest-priced finisher of the five that made it home was Mont Tremblant, who finished second at 18/1.
Ireland were responsible for the winner in full. He was bred in Ireland, while the trainer, jockey and owner were all Irish themselves.
