The 1957 Grand National was won by Sundew, who took the race at odds of 20/1. It was a success done the hard way, too, as Sundew let for almost the entire race, doing it from the front and holding onto that lead to win the race by eight lengths.
It was definitely a case of third time lucky for the horse, Sundew had tried to win the race in the previous two years but had fallen on both attempts towards the end of the race when he was getting tired.
There was none of that this season, though, he was strong enough to keep going, and jumped well to get the win.
Frank Hudson was the winning trainer, a smaller yard, and he would only actually visit the Grand National twice, this victory and when he trained Sundew the year before. He wasn’t the trainer of Sundew on his first attempt, so he ended his career with a 50% winning record in the race.
Jockey was Fred Winter, one of racing’s greats, and this was the first time he would ever win the Grand National. He would go on to win the race again as a jockey later in his career before then winning it twice as a trainer, too, making it four career victories in total.
The 35 runners included ESB, who won the race a year earlier in 1956, but he only finished 8th this time around, with a much bigger weight on his back.
