1971 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

Specify Grand National 1971
Specify

The 1971 Grand National was won by Specify, and it was one for the bookmakers, with none of the fancied runners getting anywhere near involved in the finish.

Punters betting on the race struggled, and the SP’s of the first five home were 28/1, 20/1, 33/1, 66/1 and 33/1 in the order that they finished, making Specify a 28/1 winner of the race. He held off the late challenge from Black Secret, who would finish in second place.

A  year earlier, Specify was brought down at the 22nd fence and certainly gained style compensation for that by winning in 1971.

The trainer of the winner was John E Sutcliffe, who only took over training the horse a few months before the Grand National but got him in perfect shape for the big day.

John Cook was the jockey. He also rode Specify in 71, so he knew how unlucky he was that year. He made up for that by winning this. Cook would have to retire from race riding on medical grounds just 12 months after winning the Grand National, so this was his third and final ride in the race.

Spare a thought for Gay Buccaneer, who eventually finished 10th in the race. He was clear at the Canal Turn but suffered interference from loose horses, which took him from being first and clear in the race to last.

He recovered a little, but there is no doubt that it cost him a lot of ground and who knows what could have been.
