Georgie Howell

Georgie Howell is not a name you would associate with big races, but in 2021, she got the chance to mix it up with the very best in the sport, thanks to the Grand National.

She would have her first Grand National runner in 2023, with Sub Lieutenant running for her, ridden by her daughter Tabitha Worsley, to make it a real family affair. Howell did not hold a full training license at the time of that Grand National run. Instead, she was a permit holder, which permits her to train and run her own horses, but not for other owners.

At the time of that run at Aintree, Howell hadn’t even had a winner as a permit holder, so the odds were certainly stacked against her. But on the day, she saw her horse complete the Aintree course and finish in 14th place, with the horse and her daughter, the jockey, coming home safe and sound afterwards.

While it was an unlikely tale to provide success, the story does show that anyone can compete in the Grand National. One day, Howell may find herself back at the race again, but if she doesn’t, it will still have given her a day she will never forget.
