2021 The Long Mile Fence 23 - Pulled Up - Luke Dempsey

J P Dempsey, otherwise better known as Philip Dempsey in the racing world, began his time as an exciting young amateur jockey. Considered a leading amateur in his day, which always made him someone to look out for in amateur-only races, Dempsey would later move on to become a trainer after hanging up the saddle.

He would become well known in the point-to-point industry in Ireland, but on top of that, he had regular winners under rules, too, mixing both and managing to have plenty of success. He took out his trainer license in 2004 but would have to wait until 2006, the start of that year, for his first winner, which came at Thurles and the horse was called Rossdee Lad.

He would strike up a good partnership with his son Luke Dempsey, who would become a regular rider for Philip, and the pair would be together for their first appearance in the Grand National. This came in 2021, with the horse named The Long Mile taking them to Aintree.

After a good run around the course for two thirds of the race, The Long Mile would eventually be pulled up by Luke Dempsey and taken out of the race.
