An exciting new name in the world of horse racing, Michael Keady is a trainer determined to make his career pay, and he’s spent plenty of time learning the ropes before going alone to give himself the best possible opportunity.
He is known for looking at training through a modern eye. This means including things such as data to compare runners, work out what they need to improve on, and plan out their races better.
Data is becoming a big part of sports, especially the planning phase, and Keady is a man who is more than ready to use it. Of course, he uses traditional training methods alongside this, making sure his horses are fit and really do themselves justice.
Learning would come all over the world, with time spent working in the yard in the US, France and the UK. His biggest role, the one to put the final touches to his preparation for being a trainer, would see him spend six years as assistant trainer to Mike Murphy in the UK.
In late 2024, Keady would launch his own, solo training career, with him working as his own boss, after many years assisting. He would lease a place in Newmarket, and his very first runner using his own name was Currumbin, who won at Southwell in December 2024, marking a winning start for the yard.
Known for revitalising horses, it should come as no surprise that when Keady did make his Grand National debut in 2025, he would do so using a horse that was sold out of another yard.
Horantzau d’Airy would give Keady his first runner in the Aintree showpiece, bought as a cast-off from the Willie Mullins yard, and the horse would complete to finish 13th, despite never really troubling the outcome of the race.
