Paul John Gilligan

Paul John Gilligan spent time working for numerous other trainers, such as Pat Kelly and Pauline Gavin, before finally deciding to go alone and take out a license. He did that and sent out his first runner in 1998, however, he would have to wait until 2001 for his first winner, which was Broadstone Road, who won a race at Kilbeggan.

Success was tough to come by in the early years and has never been fluid for the yard, which also makes runners very hard to come by, as without putting yourself in the shop window, owners are not inclined to send their horses.

Very gradually, things did improve, and in terms of races to get your name out there, perhaps none are bigger than the Grand National. Gilligan had his first runner in the race in 2023, and that was Born By The Sea. Not only did he complete the course, but he ran very well and finished sixth under jockey Philip Enright.

Gilligan will be hoping that more success follows for the yard.
