Paul Nolan has been around Irish horse racing for many years and has managed to have success at the top level. It’s fair to say he hasn’t been anything like a dominant force in Irish racing, but certainly one of the yards that can mix it with the big boys when they have a nice runner.
He began training in 1996, and it was in the 2000s where he really began to find success at a good level, with the likes of Joncol, Noble Prince, Mrs Milner and Latest Exhibition just some of the bigger names trained in this yard. He did have success in the earlier days at a lower level, though, an early indication that this yard was capable of readying winners.
The Nolan yard is a very diverse one, training across both yards and having winners at both sides of the Irish Sea. They are never afraid to send a runner to the likes of Cheltenham or Aintree for the big events, and that has led to Paul having runners in the Aintree Grand National.
He’s yet to taste success in the race, and it is fair to say he’s not had much luck since his first runner in the race, which was Colonel Rayburn. He ran in the contest in both 2005 and 2006 but failed to complete on both attempts, being pulled up at the 27th fence in each race.
Discorama gave Paul Nolan his best Grand National finish so far, with a 7th-placed effort in 2021, but given the strength that this yard has at its disposal, it is likely they are expecting to better that sometime in the near future.
