Sandy Thomson has been involved in horse racing around the Northern circuit for many years. He’s the third generation of his family to train from the stable he has at Lambden. His grandfather bred MacMoffat, a horse that finished second in the Grand National on two occasions, so the race has always held a little additional importance to him over some of the others on the calendar.

Prior to training horses, Thomson spent time playing rugby and riding in point-to-point races, though the two were not really a compatible fit, given the body type needed for them, so the crossover didn’t last too long. Sandy took out his full license to train under rules in 2012, this came after he had succeeded in point-to-point races, training home-bred runners to victory.

Just a year after taking out his license to train runners, Thomson put his name on the racing map, landing a big novice chase worth £60,000 on Scottish Grand National day at Ayr, a race he won with a horse called netminder.

He had to wait much longer for his first Grand National runner, which was Seeyouatmidnight in 2018. The horse completed the race and finished 11th under jockey Brian Hughes.
