Tom Gibney originally started in horse racing as a jockey. He made his name by winning the GPT Handicap at the Galway Festival, traditionally known as one of the biggest amateur rider races in Ireland.

He would wrap up his riding career in 2005 and turn his hand to training horses, taking out his license for that in 2006. However, success did not come easy, and Gibney had to wait until May 25th, 2011, for his first winner. That horse was Lion Na Bearnai, a horse that would give Gibney his biggest success, and more, a horse that really gave this man a career in many ways.

A year after that first win as a trainer, in 2012, the same horse Lion Na Bearnai, would take Gibney to the biggest stage when he won the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. Ridden by Andrew Thornton, the horse was excellent and put Gibney in the spotlight for a short period.

Two years later, in 2014, the same horse would again put Gibney in the spotlight, as he would become his first Grand National runner. Ridden by Davy Russell, he ran well but tired in the closing stages and was eventually pulled up by Russell at the 27th fence.
