Anglo Grand National Wins
- 1966 - ridden by Tim Norman trained by Frederick Thomas Winter

The win by Anglo on the track when he took the 1966 Grand National was pretty straightforward. However, in the time leading up to the race, it was far from it, and perhaps why the horse will be remembered by many.
A two-time runner in the Grand National, he would win the 1966 race at the first attempt before being pulled up a year later when trying to defend his crown. A 20-length winner (albeit in a slow time), this horse was sent off at odds of 50/1.
With no experience of the race, arriving in poor form, ridden by a man having his first Grand National ride, the odds were certainly stacked against Anglo when he turned up at Aintree.
Starting off the drama is the trainer of Anglo. Originally with Ryan Price, the horse was flying for him, winning over hurdles and then going over fences, where he won four novice chase races in a row.
However, Price was then banned from training, and the horse needed a new trainer, which is why he would move on to the yard of Fred Winter. He was a strong trainer and also a man who knew what it took to win this race, as he won the race a year earlier in 1965 with Jay Trump.
Winter’s plan was the Grand National, and despite poor form, he remained keen to execute the plan.
Originally, Eddie Harty was down for the ride, but drama came when he was injured on the day, which left Winter needing to find a new jockey. The man he turned to was Tim Norman, who was about the only man available.
Norman had never ridden in the Grand National, and if that wasn’t bad enough, then a day before the race, he was involved in a serious car crash, so who knows what his fitness was like for the ride.
With plenty of runners still in contention on the second circuit, the race turned into a stamina test. Anglo had the superior stamina, allowing him to outstay his rivals and come clear of the field to win in really good style.
Out running his odds and definitely defying all the drama that had happened before the race with both a trainer and jockey change, Anglo was able to come out on top.
He would return to Aintree a year later, at much shorter odds, he was sent off fourth favourite but was pulled up after losing ground at the end of the first circuit.
Anglo’s Big Race Wins
Aside from his attempts in the Grand National and the odd other run, Anglo was very much kept to smaller races during his career, so while this was his only big race win, he didn’t have many chances to record one.
His form would tail off towards the end of his career, pulling up in the Grand National and other big races he contested, including the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, which would be one of his final starts.
