2025 Fence 28 - Pulled Up - 10-6 Nick Scholfield Jonjo & A J O’Neill

Foaled in 2016, Monbeg Genuis has shown all the credentials to be a top quality staying chaser, capable of competing in some of the biggest handicaps on the calender.

In terms of stayers, there’s none bigger than the Grand National, and this is a race that he made his debut in during the 2024/25 season. Trained by Jonjo O’Neill, he would line up for the Grand National, and went well, although he was unable to finish the race in the end.

Ridden by Nick Schofield, the horse was pulled up at the 28th fence, fading and failing to fully complete the course, and the final two fences.

He would make his debut under rules in 2021, and was consistent, although given his pedigree, he always looked like a horse that would improve over longer distances and with fences in front of him.

The transition from hurdles to fences went well, so much so that the horse would record a fantastic third placed finish at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023 in the Ultima Handicap Chase. This was won by the future Grand National winner Corach Rambler and is seen as a fantastic Grand National trial.

Further flashes of real quality have been seen from the horse and while the consistency side of things is something that he needs to work on, the ability is there. Unfortunately he didn’t finish in his first Grand National attempt, but there’s every chance that we see more of him in the race in years to come.
