Ciaran Gethings would make his Grand National debut in 2018 when riding Saint Are for Tom George.
At the time, he was a young up-and-coming jockey on the rise, and one who was gaining strong stock within racing as being someone who could ride a horse well.
Born in Ireland, his pro career would begin in 2013, while his first win under rules would come in November 2014, winning at Newbury on a horse trained by Philip Hobbs.
Gethings has spoken about his time working for Hobbs, and more importantly, the tutelage he received while there from Richard Johnson, who was a stable jockey at the time, and one of the greatest jockeys of his generation.
He would move to Tom George in 2017, looking for increased opportunities within racing, and it was, of course, this move that enabled him to pick up his first Grand National ride.
Gethings has yet to win at Grade One level, but he has won at Grade Two level, with his first success at this tier coming in January 2018. Further Graded wins would come, and he’s also bagged a win over the Grand National fences, winning the 2024 Topham Chase on Arizona Cardinal.
