A field of 24 runners would take part in the 1861 Grand National, and from those, a total of nine would be able to complete the Aintree course. Going on the day was described as good to soft, soft in places, and it was one of the fancied runners that would lead the field home.
Jealousy would run out a two length winner of the race, returned with an SP of 5/1, making her the second favourite with bookmakers. Anatis, the winner from a year earlier, was sent off as the 4/1 favourite, but he would fall.
This was the second attempt at the Grand National by Jealousy, two years prior to winning the race, she was 11th in 1859. She would return two years after this, in 1863, where she would finish in 6th position.
A mare winning the race was not very common, so this was a special success for Jealousy.
Charles Balchin trained her and would give him his one and only win in the race. He had a total of nine attempts to win the contest and would also record three placed efforts alongside this win. He died a year later.
The winning rider was Joseph Kendall, and just like the trainer Balchin, he was also having his one and only success in the Grand National here. Kendall had a total of six rides in the race and completed the course in five of them. However, this was his only win and the only time he got anywhere near the front at the finish.
