The Lamb was the winner of the 1871 Grand National, and in winning this race, he landed the Grand National for the second time.
He was clearly fancied in the market, with people remembering what he had done in the past in the race, even if it was three years prior to this race, and that meant he returned with an SP of just 5/1. The ground on the day was described as good to firm.
The Lamb would be pushed out by jockey Tommy Pickernell and would win the race by two lengths, repeating his feat from three years earlier.
As mentioned, this was the second time that this horse had won the race, from just two attempts. The first came in 1868 when he was ridden and trained elsewhere, and he wouldn’t run in the race after that until this attempt, presumably due to injury.
He would run for a third time a year later in 1872, where he ran a strong race under far more weight and would finish a respectable fourth place.
Chris Green was the winning trainer on this occasion, and just like the horse, he was also having his second winner of the race here. The first win for Green came all the way back in 1859 when Half Caste was successful. Despite having more attempts to win the race, this would be the last success he would have.
Rounding off those having a second win in the race was the jockey Tommy Pickernell. He would have a total of three career Grand National wins. The first was in 1860 on Anatis, while this was the second. Then he would add a third in 1875 with Pathfinder, and considering he had placed efforts too, he would end his riding career with an excellent Grand National record overall.
