1884 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

Voluptuary 1884 Grand National Winner
Voluptuary

Voluptuary was the winner of the 1884 Grand National, and he would come away from the field to record a winning distance of four lengths.

He was returned with a starting price of 10/1, so amongst the more fancied runners, but not the favourite to win the race.

Just 15 runners would contest this race, and 13 of them would manage to finish, with a real emphasis at the time on riders completing the race, even if that meant remounting their horses after multiple falls. The race was run on good ground, and conditions on the day were described as fine.

The winning trainer was William Wilson, who would have his only race winner here, and it would come from just two runners in the race. A small-time trainer, this would be the only time he would see one of his horses complete the Aintree course.

Ted Wilson was the winning rider, and this would be the only time he would take a ride in the Grand National.

Voluptuary would return to run in the Grand National on three further occasions in 1889, 1890 and 1891. However, he would fail to complete the course in all three of those attempts.
