Joe Tizzard is still known at the moment for his riding success rather than training success, but it probably won’t take him long to progress in the training ranks, being set up perfectly to continue to great work done by his father, Colin Tizzard.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, Colin would retire from racing and hand the reins over to his son Joe, after the paid had been working together as a duo ever since Joe retired from riding. Before training, Joe had a successful 18-year career in the saddle, riding over 700 winners, with many of those being provided for him by his father.

Training was always going to be the plan for Joe, and he went on to help his father before taking over complete control of the yard. In 2023, Joe would have his first Grand National runner with his name solely at the side, The Big Breakaway was the horse, but he would only get as far as the second fence, where he fell.

Given the makeup of the yard and the fact that little has changed from Colin to Joe in the handover, Joe has a great platform to build success on.

Career as a Jockey

Joe will have to do plenty in the training ranks before he is better known as a trainer rather than a jockey because of the success he had in that sphere. He was a champion conditional jockey as a youngster, a time when he was away from his father, riding for Paul Nicholls, who was having a lot of success then.

But it wasn’t too long before Joe decided to move back home and become a stable jockey for his father. Amongst the highlights was their time with Cue Card, a horse that Joe rode to success in four Grade One races, including twice at the Cheltenham Festival, an absolute stable superstar for the Tizzard’s.
