Graeme McPherson first took his steps into racing as a jockey but struggled and eventually decided that it was best for him to move into training. Finally, in 2005, he would realise that dream as he began to train from the Martins Hill stable, beginning with point-to-point runners.
It was an instant success for McPherson, who had a winner with his first runner, with Mr Nabarro winning at Cottingham. In 2010, McPherson would make the decision to turn and train in the professional racing industry, continuing with the same 12-box yard that kicked off his training career as an amateur.
The ball was rolling, a new yard came along with new facilities and more success, despite McPherson continuing to operate at the lower end of the racing spectrum. McPherson would stop training alone and create a partnership with Fergal O’Brien, as they tried to pool resources and take on the big boys, but that would come to an end in 2023, with them deciding to go separately again.
In 2021, Ami Debois would give McPherson his first Cheltenham Festival winner. The horse would not complete the course, being brought down at the 15th fence.
