Double Chance Grand National Wins
- 1925 - ridden by Major John Wilson trained by F Archer
Is there such a thing as a quiet Grand National and a relatively low-key winner? If there is, then Double Chance, who won the race in 1925, ticks both of those boxes.
A nine-year-old at the time of his win, it would come in his only attempt at the Grand National, one race, one win, a perfect record.
Trained by Fred Archer Jr, he was sent off with an SP of 100/9, so quietly fancied if not amongst the favourites for the race. He would come clear of the field to record a winning distance of four lengths.
While this was the only time Double Chance would run in the race, it was also the only time Archer had a runner in it. The jockey was Major John Wilson, a strong amateur at the time who had a big military background. He would win this race in the second of his three rides in it.
One small point of note with this success is the start of the race. Double Chance was the first winner of the Grand National who would do so in a race that was started by tape, the method we use today for race starts over jumps in the UK and Ireland.
