Drogheda Grand National Wins
- 1898 - ridden by John Gourley trained by Richard Dawson
It is fair to say that Drogheda will go down as one of the lesser-known Grand National winners from over the years.
Winner of the contest in 1898, this would be the only time the horse would run in the race. He would arrive with decent form in the book, but nothing too special, and that would play into his SP for the race, which was big at 25/1.
There was little experience in the Grand National from those around the trainer. Richard Dawson was sending his first runner to the race here. He would only actually have one more after, coming 20 years later.
There was knowledge up top, though, the jockey on the day was John Gourley, a man who had ridden Manifesto when he fell in 1896, a horse that would go on to be an all-time great of the race. Gourley wouldn’t win, and it would also mark his last attempt in the Grand National.
Some horses from years gone by can have a small impact on the Grand National, despite winning it, and Drogheda is one of those. A three-length winner on the day, his only attempt at the race, and a horse who did little afterwards to leave his mark.
