1847 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1847 Grand NationalWhile the 1847 Grand National was not the first race, either officially or unofficially, it did signal an important time in the history of the race.

This was the first year that the race would officially be called The Grand National. Previously, it was known by the name ‘Grand Liverpool Steeplechase’.

Twenty-six runners would go to post this year, and of those, six were able to complete and finish the course, with going described as good, good to firm in places.

The winning horse was named Mathew, and despite him coming here to run for the first time in this race, he was sent off with an SP of 10/1, showing that he was clearly amongst the fancied runners and expected to do well.

After winning the race, Mathew would return 12 months later to try and defend his crown, however, he would fall in that race, and it would be the last time he would run in the Grand National.

John Murphy was the winning trainer, and just like the horse, it was the first time he had been to take part in the Grand National. Over the years, he would have a total of six runners in the Grand National, and this would be his only winner from them.

Denny Wynne was the successful rider, and this would be his second attempt at the Grand National after finishing third a year earlier on his first attempt. He would go close to winning again, with four placed rides in the race, but this would be the only time he would win the race, from a total of 12 attempts.
