Winning the 1855 Grand National was Wanderer, a horse who was coming to this race for the one and only time he won it, and we never saw him in the race again. He would return with an SP of 25/1, generally unfancied in the market really.
It was the same for all those who finished in the places. The first four home were at prices of 25/1, 50/1, 20/1 and 33/1.
The going on the day was described as soft, and from the 21 horses that started the race, just nine were able to complete it, with the ground making this test tougher than normal.
The winner was trained and ridden by the same man, with John Hanlon taking up the ride on the horse that he trained. He was a man who had two horses in the race on this particular year, choosing to ride Wanderer ahead of Boundaway, who would finish in 9th position.
Hanlon would have four rides in the race as a jockey, and this would actually be the only time that he would complete the race, failing to do so on the three other occasions. Two of those, including this winner, were riding a horse that he had also trained.
As a trainer, he had three runners in the race, riding two of them, and this was the only time he had success.
A note about two of the other runners in this race. Firstly, Freetrader would finish second here, and he would return 12 months later and win the 1856 Grand National.
Secondly, there was a sad incident where the very popular former winner, Miss Mowbray, fell and died in the race. First in 1852 to win the race and second in 1853, this was a popular horse with the public at the time.
