The 1948 Grand National was won by Sheila’s Cottage at a big price of 50/1.
Going on the day was good, and 43 runners would start the race, with 14 of them managing to complete.
The finish was close, but Sheila’s Cottage just managed to hold on, winning the race by one length from First of The Dandies, who was in second place and just missed out.
This year, Neville Crump was the winning trainer, and Arthur Thompson was the winning jockey. For Crump, this was the first of three wins in the race, with further success coming in 1952 and 1960.
He is regarded as a trainer who knew what it took to win the Grand National, training horses specifically for the race. This win was the start of all that, his second attempt to win the race after Sheila’s Cottage fell 12 months earlier.
For Thompson, this was the first of his two wins in the race as a jockey. He ended his career with two wins and a second-placed effort from just nine rides, so he had a strong record in the race.
With his second win, he would again team up in 1952 with Crump to land another team win in the race on a horse named Teal.
12th Mare to Win Grand National
When crossing the line first, Sheila’s Cottage would become the 12th mare to win the Grand National in its history.
Mares often leave training before having the chance to run in this race, so not too many have a go. However, in particular, before this race, success for mares was at a low point.
Sheila’s Cottage became the first mare to win the race for 46 years here, showing just how difficult it is for a mare to get into the race and then win it.
