The horse Manifesto would be successful in the 1897 Grand National. He wouldn’t just win the race but would do so in a very comfortable fashion, taking the race by a recorded winning distance of 20 lengths.
Ten runners would complete the course from a total of 28 runners, with the race being run on good ground.
Manifesto would eventually have an excellent Grand National record, but at the time of winning this, it was the first time we really noticed him and what a horse he could be, something he would definitely go on to prove.
The winning trainer was Willie McAuliffe, and he would actually only train the horse this year out of the many years he was in training. The horse ran a total of eight times in the Grand National but just once under McAuliffe.
This was also the only ever Grand National runner he would have overall, leaving him with a perfect one-winner from one start.
Terry Kavanagh rode the horse to success, and he had plenty of Grand National runners over the years, but this would be his only win. He would have nine rides in total, with one second-placed effort plus two further-placed efforts alongside this win.
Of course, a word on the winner, Manifesto too, who proved to be an incredibly tough horse. This was the third of eight Grand National runs. He would win the race twice, winning here and then coming back to win the race again in 1899.
After that, he would finish third in the race on three different occasions, taking his place record to four in total. Eight runs, seven completions, one win and four places, that record is as good as any other you will see in terms of longevity and the ability to keep coming back and running again.
