The 1902 Grand National gave us a surprising result with the winner but also with the number of finishes in the race.
You don’t see it too often, but more horses would complete the course and finish in 1902 than those that didn’t. Twenty-one ran in the race, 11 would complete, and ten would fail to complete, a stat you do not see very often with this race.
The winner of the race was Shannon Lass, who would take the contest by three lengths and win at odds of 20/1. The race was run on good to soft ground, and the fact that conditions weren’t a struggle definitely helped the number of finishers in the contest.
The winning trainer of Shannon Lass was James Hackett, a man who didn’t train many horses or have many Grand National contenders. A year before this success, he would train Padishah for the race, who would fall, and then Shannon Lass would be the last runner he ever had in the race.
The jockey on the day was David Read, and he is another who didn’t go to the Grand National very often. This was his only win in the race from a total of four attempts, completing twice and falling twice.
