1909 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

Luttier III 1909 Grand National Winner
Luttier III

In quite an unusual sight, especially for the time in which this race was run, 19 of the 32 runners in the 1909 Grand National would complete the course. This wasn’t something we saw too often, the test was gruelling, but in this particular year, plenty were able to get around Aintree.

The winner on the day was Lutteur III, but the margin wasn’t a big one, he would eventually win the race by two lengths.

He was returned with an SP of 100/9.

There was a definite French connection to the race this particular year, and that began with the fact that the horse was a French-bred runner. On top of that, he was French-owned and French-ridden in this particular race, making this really feel like an overseas winner.

Lutteur III would run three times in the race, finishing third in 1914, his next best effort, and falling in 1911.

The horse was young when he won the race, at just five years old, and in the modern day, that would make him too young to run in the contest.

French jockey Georges Parfrement was having his first ride in the Aintree Grand National here, and it would be a successful start for him. He would go on to have another six rides in the race after this one, but none of those would be winning rides.

The winning trainer was Harry Escott, a man who had great success over the years in the Grand National, and after a couple of near misses in earlier years, this would land him his first National winner.

He would go on to record more wins in 1918 and 1919 with Poethlyn, and he would also have four placed runners, so he ended with three wins and four places from a total of 18 runners.
