What is believed to be a record on-course crowd watched the 1937 Grand National. It is reported that over 300,000 people watched the race live, though the only ones who were charged admission were those watching from within the enclosure itself.
The race was won by Royal Mail, at odds of 100/6 and taking the race by a distance of three lengths. It was a popular named winner, with the royals King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in attendance on course for the race.
This was a Welsh success, with trainer Ivor Anthony and jockey Evan Williams both from Wales and enjoying the moment.
The victory was a second in the race for Anthony, who had previously trained the 1933 winner Kellsboro’ Jack, while for Williams, this was his one and only success.
Conditions on the day were described as soft, and just seven of the 33 runners would manage to complete the course.
Golden Miller was sent off as race favourite, with fans believing he could repeat his 1934 victory in the race. However, it was actually his 1935 running that he would replicate, as just like that year, he refused at the 10th fence, just like he did in 1935.
