Winning the 1886 Grand National was Old Joe, who was relatively unfancied in the market and would come home with a starting price of 25/1.
Run on good to soft ground, he would win the race well, by a distance of six lengths, in front of Too Good, who would finish second.
This was the first time that Old Joe had run in the Grand National, but he didn’t have any trouble completing the course. He would return two further times to try and win again. He was pulled up 12 months later when trying to defend his crown and finished 11th in 1888 in his final run.
George Mulcaster was the winning trainer, he wouldn’t have too many attempts at this race, just six in total, and this would be the only winner from those.
Tom Skelton was the winning rider, another man who didn’t have a large Grand National career. Just like trainer Mulcaster, he had six attempts to the win the Grand National, and this was his only winner.
Skelton fell in his last two races, but before that, he had an excellent record, with one win and three placed efforts in his first four rides in the race.
