We’ve heard plenty of family connections landing the Grand National, but on few occasions do we get the same person both training and riding the winner, but that’s exactly what happened in 1906 when Aubrey Hastings landed the big prize.
His name became famous for being associated with the Grand National, and he would eventually go on to win the race four times as a trainer. But he also won it as a jockey, a short part of his career, and when he rode the winner of the race, it was one that he also trained.
Ascetic’s Silver was the winner of the race, falling a year earlier when trained by Tom Dunn, he made up for it here and would land the race by ten lengths at odds of 20/1.
Twenty-three runners would contest the Grand National this year, and nine would finish, helped by fast conditions, with the ground described as good to firm on the day.
Three of those runners were trained by Hastings, and he chose to ride the right one, as the other two both failed to complete the course.
Specifically in terms of riding in the race, this was the second of four mounts Hastings had, and all four were horses that he trained. He never took any outside rides. A fall in his first attempt in 1905, this win followed, and then he would ride the same horse to 6th and 11th-placed finishes in the future.
More success would come as a trainer, though, Hastings would win the Grand National four times in total, with further wins in 1915, 1917 and 1924.
This was a unique achievement for him and the start of what would become an exceptional Grand National record, winning the race four times as a trainer and once as a jockey.
