The 1931 Grand National was won by Grakle, who was trained by a man who was familiar with the Grand National and what it takes to win it.
He would beat Gregalach by one and a half lengths, a horse who was becoming accustomed to the race, while Annandale was back in third place.
Grakle would win the race at odds of 100/6, with the race being run on good to firm ground, so the surface was very quick.
There was a big field for this particular year, with 43 runners going to post at the start. Twelve of them would manage to complete the race.
The winning rider on the day was Bob Lyall, a man who was having his one and only Grand National success here. He would end his career riding in the race a total of nine times and would only complete the course twice from them, with one of those completions being this success.
A special mention for Gregalach, who finished second here. He would go on to run in the Grand National six times, with a win and a second to his name.
Tom Coulthwaite Lands Third and Final Grand National
The winning trainer of Grakle was Tom Coulthwaite, a man who, when coming here, had already won the Grand National on two occasions, with this race making it three.
It was a long time coming. His first two successes came in 1907 with Eremon and then again in 1910 with Jenkinstown.
In between those and this success, he had plenty of near misses in the race, with three seconds and two thirds.
Had he managed to get either of those over the line, then he would have been a four-time winner and been one of the most decorated trainers in Grand National history.
Cutting back on his string towards the end of his career, Grakle would actually be the only runner for Coulthwaite during these later years, and he threw everything behind getting him to the race.
Grakle would run a total of six times in the National, a remarkable training performance by Coulthwaite to get him there, and he was rewarded with one win from those.
