1933 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

Kellsboro Jack Grand National Winner 1933
From Kellsboro Jack Scrapbook, National Sporting Library & Museum Archives Collection

Kellsboro’ Jack was the winner of the 1933 Grand National at Aintree, and he took the race by a winning distance of three lengths, with big outsider Really True chasing him home in second place.

The horse won at odds of 25/1 on the day, so a high price and the going was described as good to firm, so it was another Grand National ran on quick ground.

A total of 34 horses ran in the race, and impressively, 19 of those managed to complete the course, a number greater than what we are used to seeing for finishers.

The fast ground helped with that, making it a slightly easier test than when the ground is soft, though, of course, it’s still a tough test for horses and riders at Aintree.

Winning trainer was Ivor Anthony, a man who at the time was having his first Grand National win at the sixth attempt. He would go on to have further success in 1937 when Royal Mail won the contest.

The jockey on the day was Dudley Williams, and this would actually be his final ever Grand National ride. He had a total of six rides in the race, with a solid record of one win, two thirds and then three times where he failed to complete.

Golden Millar was amongst the favourites, he’d won the 1932 and 1933 Cheltenham Gold Cup’s and would go on to win the Grand National in 1934, a year later. However, he would fall towards the end of this race, which would bring an end to his chances in this particular year.

A year earlier, Forbra had won the Grand National and carried plenty of hopes to win it again, but this time around, although he was able to complete the course, he would only come 6th.
