The winner of the Grand National in 1895 was a horse that would go down as having one of the strangest names in racing. Indeed, one you wouldn’t forget during the time of the race.
A horse named Wild Man From Borneo would go on to win the contest, and he was sent off with an SP of 10/1, which is a little surprising given he was here 12 months before and ran well to finish third.
This particular year saw a tougher test than normal on paper, though the finishing runners do not suggest that. The going was heavy, but despite that, 11 of the 19 runners were able to complete the course and come home.
Wild Man From Borneo would win the contest by one and a half lengths, with Cathal back in second place.
It was a win for trainer James Gatland, and this would be the only Grand National success of his career. He would also place with this horse 12 months prior, but none of his other five attempts at the race would produce any kind of result.
Joe Widger would be the winning jockey on the day, and this horse would give him his one and only winner in the race. His first two rides in it both came on this horse and from seven rides in total over his career, he would end with one win and two placed efforts, so a reasonable total.
The horse Wild Man From Borneo would return to the Grand National for the next two seasons, but with far more weight on his back in those races, found life very tough. He would fail to complete either, ending his career with a record of one Grand National win and one Grand National place from a total of four runs.
